Chartered as the Louisa Railroad in 1836; changed name to Virginia Central Railroad in 1850. Rail was in use from then until after the Civil War, although it did need to close for repairs due to damage it sustained during the war. In 1868, it merged with the Covington and Ohio Railroad, forming the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway.
