Lynchburg Museum
Originally from Lynchburg, Virginia, Rodes attended the Virginia Military Institute, where he studied Civil Engineering. Rodes later became a professor at VMI until Stonewall Jackson was asked to fill a position he desired. With his engineering degree, Rodes moved to Alabama to work on the railroad. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Rodes became Commander of the 5th Ala. Infantry, which he led into battle at Bull Run. He became Brigadier General but had to temporarily step down after an arm injury sustained in the Peninsula Campaign. He was well enough to fight in Antietam and South Mountain. Ironically, he served under Jackson at Chancellorsville and was promoted by Jackson on his deathbed to become Major General. Rodes was killed in the Third Battle of Winchester in 1864.
