Pavilion I and the Baths of Diocletian

Pavilion I
Baths of Diocletian

Jefferson’s design for Pavilion I was inspired by Roland Fréart de Chambray's depiction of the Doric order from the Baths of Diocletian found in Parallèlle de l'architecture antique avec la moderne. The use of ornament is more restrained in Pavilion I than is found in Chambray’s engraving, but the frieze does retain the faces of Apollo surrounded by a sunburst. Recent investigations at the pavilion revealed that the faces and sunbursts were originally painted a bright yellow, but were painted white to match the rest of the frieze at some later date.
