Pavilion II and the Temple of Fortuna Virilis

Pavilion II
Temple of Fortuna Virilis

The design of Pavilion II is based on the Ionic order used at the Temple of Fortuna Virilis in Rome, illustrated in Andrea Palladio’s Quattro Libri dell'Architettura. The influence of the Temple of Fortuna Virilis is more readily apparent in Pavilion II than in Pavilion IX, which also uses it as a model- particularly the frieze decoration of ox sculls, putti, ribbons, and fruit garlands. Another defining feature of the Temple of Fortuna Virilis that is found at Pavilion II are the diagonally positioned volutes of the Ionic capitals found on the outer columns.
