Pavilion III and Palladio's Corinthian Order

Pavilion III
Palladio's Corinthian Order

For the design of Pavilion III, Jefferson relied on Palladio’s Corinthian order with details provided by architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who had sent Jefferson a series of sketches for pavilion designs in October of 1817. According to correspondence between the two, Jefferson only changed Latrobe’s design to fit the building site and to remove the pyramidal roof design in favor of a flatter roof. The gable roof is partly obscured by a balustrade that was original to Jefferson’s design but removed sometime in the late 1800s. It was rebuilt in 2017.
