Pavilion IV and the Doric Order of the Temple at Albano

Pavilion IV
Doric Order of the Temple at Albano

Jefferson’s notes for Pavilion IV, inscribed on the back of his drawings for the building, read “Doric of Albano,” which refers to Chambray’s drawing of the Doric Temple at Albano. Chambray’s depiction of the Roman Doric order of the temple shows a highly decorated entablature with rosettes on the underside of the cornice, paterae, or medallions, on the frieze, and egg-and-dart carving of the Doric column capitals. Jefferson simplifies all of these details for Pavilion IV, but retains the large triglyphs on the frieze and corresponding mutule blocks found on the underside of the cornice.
