Pavilion IX and the Temple of Fortuna Virilis

Pavilion IX
Temple of Fortuna Virilis

Jefferson's design for Pavilion IX was partly inspired, like Pavilion II, by Palladio's drawings of the Temple of Fortuna Virilis. The inspiration can be seen in details such as the dentils, entablature, and intricately carved Ionic capitals of the semi-circular front entrance, or exedra. Jefferson was also likely influenced by friend and architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who he often collaborated with and whose name he inscribed on his plans for Pavilion IX. Scholars also believe Jefferson took inspiration from Claude-Nicholas Ledoux's 1770 Hotel de Guimard in Paris, which may have been suggested as a model by Latrobe, or Jefferson may have been familiar with it through his architectural books and his time in Paris.
