Pavilion V and Palladio's Ionic Order

Pavilion V
Palladio's Ionic Order

Jefferson’s specifications for Pavilion V describe his inspiration as “Palladio’s Ionic modillion order.” Modillions are the brackets found on the underside of the cornice of a building and often have decorative scrollwork in the form of acanthus leaves, although the modillions of Pavilion V are plain. Modillions are typically found in the Corinthian and Composite orders, and the Roman Ionic order less frequently. Modillions can also be found on the Rotunda, Pavilion III, and Pavilion VIII, which all follow the Corinthian order.
