Pavilion VI and the Theater of Marcellus

Pavilion VI
Theater of Marcellus

According to Jefferson’s drawings for Pavilion VI, the architectural model he chose for it was the Ionic order from the Theater of Marcellus. However, he did not indicate if the plate he used for inspiration came from Chambray’s Parallèlle de l'architecture antique avec la moderne or Palladio’s Quattro Libri dell'Architettura (the plate above is from Chambray). Unlike most of the other pavilions, Pavilion VI does not have columns that distinguish it from the Tuscan colonnade that fronts the Lawn student rooms; instead, the Ionic inspiration is found in the pavilion’s entablature and pediment.
