This photograph from the Holsinger Collection (1890-1938) shows the statue of Thomas Jefferson, created by Karl Bitter, as it appeared shortly after it was gifted to the University on Founder's Day, 1915. UVa's first president, Edwin Alderman, led a procession to the site, and the president of the Southern Railway, Fairfax Harrison, gave the main address. Willie Randolph, One of Jefferson's direct descendants, unveiled the statue and placed a wreath at its feet.
