Named Persons in the Gallery of Photographs of African Americans
- Names are listed in order of appearance in the Gallery (link above)

- The 611 images in the Gallery are those that were identified with the keyword "African American;" all names associated with the photographs have been attributed by the Universtiy of Virginia Library
- J. F. Bell information from: J. F. Bell Funeral Home Records Database (http://www2.vcdh.virginia.edu/jfbell/index.shtml)
- Excluding duplicates, there are 493 discrete images (both studio portraits as well as exterior/group scenes)

Number of Persons
- Total number of individuals: (in the in-studio portraits: 539) (in all remaining photographs: 197) = 736 individuals.

- The tally of 539 African Americans covers all persons photographed within the Holsinger studio, and excludes (to the best of our ability) any duplicate images or instances where the same person appears in more than one photograph (i.e. individual portrait versus group portrait). The tally also excludes any "obviously" Caucasian individuals, which was determined based on the context of the individual photographs, and with the understanding that visible features are not the sole indication of one's racial makeup (i.e. a fair baby held by an African American woman, Glee Club members in blackface, and so on).

- The tally of 197 African Americans in all other photographs also excluded any duplicate images and any "obviously" Caucasian individuals. Since many images were taken outdoors, in action, and/or of an event, there are photographs where blurriness and lighting obscures the persons photographed such that race cannot be detected; in these cases, the person was not counted. Finally, any "large group" photos were not counted in the tally (i.e. parades, horse shows, and other such images). Finally, compared to portraits, these photographs did not always capture an individual's face as clearly, for the above reasons of lighting and blurriness, and composition (the person may appear quite small due to being in the distance or the background). Thus, it is not as easy to determine if there are instances where an individual appears in more than one photograph or portrait.

- Both tallies were carefully done in order to be as accurate as possible, and "erred on the side of caution." Still, one can reasonably state that a total of 539 African Americans in 481 portraits, and at least 197 African Americans in 104 "other" images, shows a broad variety of persons of many age ranges, classes, social settings, and events.
