Spinner, Amelia
    by Julia Munro

JUEL ID/KEY: P48270

"Amelia Spinner," a photograph by Rufus W. Holsinger on May 9, 1914.

Amelia was the daughter of Jesse and Nora (Banks) Spinner, and was approximately 19 years old at the time of photo.

The 1914-15 Charlottesville City Directory mentions an Amelia Spinner that may be the same person: "Spinner Amelia maid Rugby Rd, h Preston Heights" (p172).

On February 28, 1917 she married Charles Clarence Wayland (son of Lewis and Nannie Goodloe Wayland). Mrs. Amelia Spinner Wayland and Charles are buried side by side in the fenced Goodloe plot at the Daughters of Zion Cemetery. Mr. Wayland was a licensed undertaker and embalmer at the Irving-Way-Hill Company (now Hill & Wood Funeral Services).

The burial list for the Daughters of Zion Cemetery (updated May 22, 2019) confirms that Amelia Spinner was buried there.

NOTE that the name with which the portrait is labelled (or, labelled "untitled") is not necessarily the name of the sitter(s) photographed, but rather the name of the person who paid for it when it was taken (the date and name associated with each photograph is from the business ledgers of R. W. Holsinger).Amelia Spinner Wayland

Death notice for her husband, Charles Clarence Wayland:

*Still to be determined: whether Amelia Spinner is related to William Spinner (P43844) (UVA's first employed janitor).Spinner, Amelia
