An African-American owned Blacksmith and Wheelwright company, called "Layne & Whitlock," was located at "S. 3rd nr Water S E." W. G. Layne may possibly be a typo for William J. Layne, blacksmith, the Layne who owned this company along with W. C. Whitlock (Charlottesville City Directory 1914-15, p. 123, 204). A William J. Layne lived at 125 4th St. N W (p. 125). Mr. Whitlock of the same company was William C. Whitlock.
